After remaining on hold since 2005, the General Services Administration (GSA) has reinstated plans to construct a new U.S. Courthouse in downtown LA. The 3.7 acre dirt lot at 107 South Broadway, down the street from Morphosis’ Caltrans building, LA’s City Hall, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall, has remained dormant since 2007; shortly after the GSA abandoned Perkins + Will’s estimated $1.1 billion conceptual design due to rising costs. Now, plans for the courthouse have been scaled back and the GSA has just released the shortlisted teams competing of the project. Continue reading after the break to see who made the cut.

Shortlisted teams:

  • Skidmore Owings & Merrill with Clark
  • Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design and Gruen Associates with Hensel Phelps
  • Brooks + Scarpa and HMC Architects with McCarthy
  • NBBJ Architects with Mortensen

With an estimated price of $322 million, the 600,000 square-foot building will contain 24 courtrooms and 32 judicial chambers. The primary tenants will include the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Marshals Service, the GSA, the Federal Public Defender and the U.S. Attorney’s office. Architects are partnered with builders, as this is a design-build project.

Next, the shortlisted teams will submit proposals and the winner is expected to be announced by August or September. The GSA is planning for the design to be completed by the end of the year and projecting that the building will be completed by 2016.

Those who didn’t make the cut included Morphosis, Michael Maltzan Architects, Ehrlich Architects, AC Martin, Johnson Fain Architects, Fentress Architects, Rios Clementi Hale and Cannon Design.
